Shadow was genetically created on the space colony ARK by Professor Gerald Robotnik. Labelled as the "ultimate life form," Shadow's true reason for existing was to prove that immortality could be achieved, research intended to help Gerald's granddaughter, Maria Robotnik. Shadow befriended Maria, becoming the sickly girl's lone friend while she is confined on the ARK because of "NIDS" (Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome) which had been deemed incurable. The government, who had been funding Gerald's research, found out something objectionable in the Professor's research and what it entailed. Because of the nature of his research, the government had no other choice but to take back the ARK and confiscate the fruits of his labour. With Maria unable to leave the space colony and Shadow unwilling to leave her behind, the two sought refuge in the room that they visited often. Weak and not wanting to let Shadow die along with her, Maria sealed him in a capsule and ejected him from the ARK, telling him to "do it for her and all the people on that planet" before she ejected him toward Earth. Upon landing, however, Shadow was taken captive by G.U.N. (Guardian Units of Nations) and imprisoned on Prison Island.

Over fifty years later, Shadow is released from his confinement by Dr. "Eggman" Robotnik, Gerald's grandson. In return for this - or perhaps merely for his own ends - Shadow offered his assistance in Eggman's plans to take over the world. The only catch was that the needed to find the Chaos Emeralds which were the power source for the Eclipse Cannon, a secret weapon built into the ARK. Before they could escape, the security team caught up to them but Shadow manages to dispatch him easily (so I say; I suck at the game in general~ XD). Shadow leaves Eggman to find more Chaos Emeralds, telling him he'll be waiting on the space colony for him.

When we next see Shadow, he's on the run from the police thanks to having stolen a Chaos Emerald from a federal reserve bank. They mistake him for Sonic and, because of this, they throw everything they've got at him. After losing them, he runs into Sonic who had dispatched a security robot originally intended for Shadow. Not put out in the least by the trouble he's caused for the blue hedgehog, he displays his control over the Chaos Emeralds, using it to warp to a rooftop. The meeting is brief and it isn't long before Shadow uses Chaos Control to warp out of the area and leaves Sonic to take the rap for his crime.

As promised, Shadow arrives at the central control room of the ARK before Eggman shows up, eager to show off the Eclipse Cannon. He explains that it was part of a top secret research facility headed by Professor Gerald and because it has been deactivated for some time, it needs a large amount of energy to return to life again. For this reason, they require all the Chaos Emeralds for then, and only then, will the Cannon have the power to destroy an entire planet. Their plans are overheard by Rouge the bat, a rather well-known treasure hunter who also seems keen on joining in the plan. Her help is accepted, if only because of the Emerald she possesses as well as the intelligence reports she has on the locations of the remaining Emeralds.

The trio returns to Prison Island, where Rouge insists the Emeralds are hidden. A plan is laid with Eggman going in first to provide a distraction for Rouge to get into the base. Shadow's job was to place dynamite packs and set the timer to destroy the island, leaving Rouge to take care of pilfering the Chaos Emeralds. They set out to perform their tasks, giving the time limit of thirty minutes until the island is blown up. However, after managing to thoroughly distract the army on the island, they run into Amy Rose who promptly mistakes Shadow for Sonic. Leaving Eggman to deal with her, Rouge and Shadow split up to do their parts of the plan. While Shadow manages to complete the task without incident, Rouge isn't so lucky, sending a radio transmission saying she is trapped in the vault she was stealing from. While almost content to leave her to her fate, Shadow's memory of Maria prevents him from doing so. He races through the jungle to get to her before it's too late but Sonic shows up once more to obstruct his path. The two battle it out and are interrupted by a transmission from Eggman, wondering where Shadow is and inadvertently warning Sonic about the dynamite. Not hesitating a moment, Shadow leaves Sonic behind and gets to the vault, using Chaos Control to warp both Rouge and himself from there.

It's here we're treated to a flashback of Maria and Shadow, discussing the planet they've never had the chance to see up close: Earth. Maria asks if Shadow wonders what it's like on Earth, he replies that the Professor had once told him that his life's work was dedicated to the people who lived on the planet and to make them happy through the power of science. But Shadow has his doubts, wondering why he was created and the purpose of his existence, if he wouldn't find the answers if he were to visit Earth himself. The flashback ends with Rouge interrupting his thoughts and asking why he rescued her and commenting how unlike him it was. As expected, he shrugs off her question, saying he didn't come back for her but for the Chaos Emeralds. Rouge doesn't believe him but she doesn't get the opportunity to pry much thanks to the arrival of Eggman, announcing that preparations were complete. Rouge protests slightly, pointing out that they only had six of the seven Chaos Emeralds, however, Shadow disagrees, saying that it's more than enough for a demonstration of the Eclipse Cannon's power. Eggman transmits a broadcast worldwide, demanding the surrender of the world to him and, using the Eclipse Cannon, destroys part of the moon, causing havoc to spread across the planet. The threats did little to help them, getting no response and leaving Shadow frustrated because the Cannon would take too long to recharge without the last Emerald. Eggman demands Rouge give them the location of the last Chaos Emerald, which she gives up in the form of an article. Tails, Sonic's two-tailed fox friend, had been given the Emerald as a reward for saving Station Square from a missile attack.

They return to Earth to track Tails down, Rouge finding him first and following him down the highway until he takes off in his plane. Shadow chases him next through the hills until he, too, is unable to follow any further. He notifies Eggman that Tails is heading toward their trap, leaving it in his hands. Unfortunately, Eggman fails and the group gets away, using a rocket to infiltrate the ARK where Rouge had already returned to. In the meantime, Eggman and Shadow had managed to return to the ARK themselves, puzzling over the two Emerald signatures they were getting. Eggman pieces it together quickly, realizing that one is a fake Emerald. Shadow makes a move to intercept the intruders but Eggman stops him to do it himself.

Eggman manages to eject Sonic into space along with the fake Emerald in a capsule which self destructs, a scene which Shadow witnesses, much to his amusement. After seeing this, he returns to the central control room only to find Rouge trying to steal the Emeralds. It was then that he recognized her as a government spy. Though she was found out, she really wasn't fazed by his discovery, instead divulging the information about the ultimate life form she had found. Though the name "Shadow" was the same, the image attached to the file was most definitely not the Shadow they all knew. Ever the master at it by now, Eggman interrupts them proclaiming he has the seventh Chaos Emerald and that someone was heading toward the Eclipse Cannon. Shadow is charged with stopping the would-be intruder, giving Rouge the warning that she should leave the Emeralds there if she wished to live. Before he leaves, she asks if he truly believes that he is the real Shadow, but he has no doubts, even if his memories aren't real, wishing only to fulfil his promise of revenge to Maria.

Once outside, Shadow finds out that the intruder is none other than Sonic who had managed to save himself from destruction. Impressed by this, the two begin running in a silent agreement to a race to get to the control room. And it's as he's running down that strip of road that he comes into Avoria~

Shadow has a very abrasive personality and generally only seems to tolerate working with someone so long as they don't interfere with his own plans. He generally doesn't like giving anyone the time of day and will be terse with them or give them the silent treatment if he doesn't find any interest in them. Deep down, he does have a good heart but it would take some time before he ever shows that, if he ever does. Thanks to this, he is a difficult creature to get along with but, with perseverance, one might be able to break his hard exterior (though don't hold your breath~ XD).

As for his powers, he doesn't really have many. He's acrobatic and his speed relies on his jet-powered shoes. Not that he would ever find one but he is unable to use Chaos Control on a Chaos Emerald in Avoria. Anything that would pass as one wouldn't work, either.
